State:  Even though the Oregon Legislature is not in session, workshops are being held and the Senators and Representatives are drafting bills that they will be introducing in 2009.  Last week I attended a workshop conducting by Rep. Suzanne Bonamici that is drafting a bill concerning persticide usage on school properties.  The part of the bill that affects local growers is "buffer" zones that advocacy groups want to develop around schools.  The proposal at the meeting was for 1/4 mile zone around all schools in Oregon where no applications of pesticides or herbicides could occur.  The workshop group will be meeting again and CGFG is holding to an aboslute "no" on any type of buffer zone.

Federal:  The Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers (previously known as the Hood River Grower-Shipper Association) is a member of the Northwest Horticultural Council, US Apple Association and National Council of Agricultural Employees, which address federal legislation.  These groups each request grower particpation in contacting Senators and Representatives with comments on legislation that the industry may or may not support.
